Types of Engineering Jobs and What They Involve

Author comment,s
Author comment,s

There are many types of engineering jobs. Most, if not all, require a person to have some creative skills, as well as mathematical and scientific expertise. The types of engineers are broadly classified as mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical. There are many subcategories. In all of these fields, people must try to design and build things to solve problems and, hopefully, make society better. They must do this by keeping in mind just how feasible their design will be to build and if it is worth the cost.

A mechanical engineer is one who has been trained to design mechanical systems, and practices designing mechanical systems. They may work on vacuum technology, power systems, transportation products, weapon systems, aircraft, kinematic chains, vibration isolation, or any other physical machine. An electrical engineer works on a rather large number of electrical items and systems. This includes telecommunications, computers, fiber optics, electronic circuits, electronic devices, electromagnetic devices, generators, circuits, and many others.

If somebody goes into civil engineering they will likely help to design and construct structures the public uses daily. They also work on structures for private individuals. Their job description may involve large buildings, bridges, roads, water supply, railroads, water treatment systems and other structures we all use. A chemical engineer works with chemical processing, usually on a large scale. They may develop new types of fuel, which are hopefully better and less polluting than what people are using now.

All of these engineering jobs usually require a large amount of education. How much will depend largely on the field and subcategory one chooses. A relatively new growing field is software engineering. In this field, a person will help improve software in hopes of making it better and cheaper. Someone in an environmental field works with water treatment and its impact on the environment. If somebody is in the agricultural field, they might be involved in chemical or mechanical engineering, depending on if they are making machines for agricultural purposes, or something animal or plant biology related. They help with devising better ways to make food available for people and livestock.

A person's interest will help them decide which field to pursue. If somebody grew up playing with boats, they may like marine engineering where they can try to build a better boat. If somebody likes to play with Legos and blocks, they may like to go into the architectural field. There they can use their passion for building to make marvelous structures and overcome many building problems. They will also work on making structures that are safe from all kinds of weather and natural disasters.

All of these fields of engineering jobs are involved in making things better. A sales engineer is almost like a glorified sales person, but they are highly educated and more able to help consumers make good purchasing decisions and use their products. They are the ones who help with troubleshooting today's troublesome technology. These jobs may take a lot of training, but the right people can get this done.

Best Oil Industry Entry Level Jobs

A career in the oil industry can be a demanding yet rewarding experience. The energy market is a vast network of oil and gas companies that require new talent all the time to keep up with the global demand for energy. From oil exploration and drilling to commodity trading and consulting a career in the oil business is full of opportunities for people with a high school education and Master's degrees. If you have the desire to make a career for yourself in the oil industry, consider a few tips for landing entry-level oil jobs.

Unless you have a 4-year degree or Master's degree in science or engineering the best place to look for work is an oil rig. Many positions are available on land based oil rigs that require nothing more than a high school diploma, some experience in construction and an ability to work with tools and fix machinery. Roughnecks, roustabouts, leasehands and floor hands are all entry-level oil jobs one can find in abundance on oil rigs around the world. You may be tested on certain aptitudes depending on the company you are applying with and the experience required but if you are good with tools and have a strong work ethic getting a foot in the door by way of an entry-level oil job can be a great way to start.

Before applying for a job in the oil industry understand that low-level jobs are not easy. Roughneck, roustabout and floor hand jobs involve long hours, heavy lifting and hauling, extreme weather conditions and often a lot of overtime. Dirty, demanding and tough oil jobs are not for the weak and you also have to be prepared for months away from home as you seek out an oil rig that has a position open. When starting out you may find yourself relocating to Canada, Africa or South America to find a roughneck or roustabout job but take it if you can find it.

Once you have your foot in the door and have proven yourself to be reliable and competent you can expect promotions quickly. Roughnecks and roustabouts often get promoted to other oil rig positions including Derrickman, oil rig welder and oil driller. With the promotion come higher wages and more responsibility. Many oil rig workers who start on the ground floor learn all there is to know about operating and maintaining oil rigs which is essential to reach the level of rig manager. Oil companies like rig managers to have a full understanding of the rig and how it works and the best way to learn is to start as a roughneck or roustabout since those positions require workers to be involved in every aspect of the function of an oil rig.

Not everyone is cut out for working in the oil industry. Again, the hours are long, the work is tough and dirty and you can expect to be away from family and friends for months at a time. Career Cast's Survey on Roustabout Jobs

Author comment,s

If you have been looking for roustabout jobs, you may want to consider what a recent study of Career Cast revealed. Career Cast is a web portal for helping people locate their ideal career. Every year they conduct a variety of studies on the job market. Their recent study revealed the 10 worst jobs, rated by those who work in those various fields.

Roustabout jobs were ranked the worst jobs out of the ten possible worst jobs. The next four worst jobs were: ironworker, lumberjack, roofer, and taxi driver. Each of these positions were rated on the following criteria.

Worst Job Evaluation Criteria

  1. Work Environment
  2. Stress
  3. Physical Demands
  4. Hiring Outlook
  5. Income

These are just some of the difficult working conditions of roustabouts. They work twelve-hour shifts for 14 or more days at a time. And they work in hostile weather conditions that can include extreme cold and heat. Deep in the oceans they may deal with severe ocean storms in volatile rain and wind. These rig workers are isolated from their loved ones for extended amounts of time. And in some places of the world they deal with the threat of physical attack from locals. They also work around highly dangerous equipment with the potential for deadly explosions.

The Career Cast survey examined 200 different types of jobs. They employed a set of questions which were asked of people who typically work in these specific occupations. So the results should be considered unbiased in that they take in a full range of people. In other words, insiders are doing the evaluating.

As is true with many things, people on the outside of a profession may feel that they have the worst job ever. But that type of self-evaluation is much more subjective in nature. There is nothing to buffer that belief against, which tends to lend more credibility to Career Cast's study.

What makes the Career Cast survey so valuable is the fact that jobs are rated alongside one another. This means that 200 different jobs were rated by people who are working in that specific position. When scores are compared across the board, the evaluation becomes less subjective and more objective.

Career Cast says there are two primary reasons why it believes that roustabout jobs are at the bottom of the list for 2011. Last year, this occupation was in the bottom 20 for nearly every category. But at that time it was not considered the worst job. They believe the 2010 Deepwater Horizon incident is to blame. The government tightened restrictions on drilling in the gulf region for seven years. And there were many deaths and injuries. With the restrictions of drilling in the gulf and the loss of life, Career Cast believes these are major contributing factors to the study this year.

Career Cast also suggests that roustabout jobs are part of a fading industry. They believe that people may want to consider different career options. Their study indicates the best job was working as a software engineer. They argue that this field continues to look very bright into the future.

With that said, someone had to answer the questions on their survey. And what that suggests to me, is that there continues to be many who are willing to do this job, even if it is the worst job. And I doubt that we are going to see a mass exodus of: ironworkers, lumberjacks, roofers, taxi drivers, or even roustabouts. At least not any time soon.

If the Career Cast study hasn't scared you away from this career, then click on Roustabout Jobs to learn more about this opportunity. You can go to http://roustaboutjobsinfo.com/ to become more informed, and see if this is the right job for you.

How To Find A Great Job Online

Author Comment,s

By

Online jobs can help students pay for some of the bills and costs associated with a college or high school lifestyle. They offer flexible hours and decent pay. However, because there are so many options, and many of these options turn out to be scams, it is often very hard to find online work that is legitimate.

Here are some tips to finding a legitimate online job, as well as some examples of options:

Deciphering what is real, and what is not...

The first key to finding a great way to make money online is to figure out what offers are real, and what are not. Here are ways to determine:

1 - If there is a fee, chances are the option is not great. If someone offers you a money making opportunity, but then asks for a startup fee or recurring payment, chances are they are trying to make money off of you, instead of helping you make money.

2 - Beware of false claims. If you see something that says - guaranteed money making strategy, chances are it is not legitimate. If any strategy were guaranteed, everyone would be doing it. Be sure to carefully examine the truthfulness of programs or options before choosing them.

That being said, here are some services that are legitimate:

oDesk - oDesk is an online contracted writing community. It allows freelance writers to bid on projects put up by employers. They can then complete the writing projects and get paid for their work. This is a legitimate way to make money online.

eBay - Yes, eBay. I tell people time and time again about the profit potential of eBay. If you have spare items laying around, consider snapping a photo of them and putting them up on eBay. You would be surprised at how much money you can potentially make by selling items on eBay.

These are just a few services you could use to make money on the internet. The key is to not get tricked into something that looks too good to be true. Many expert marketers place incentivizing ads that appear to offer miracle products. Chances are, if it looks too good to be true, it is. Be very careful when browsing the internet not to get tricked into one of these offers.

By using these tips and browsing the listed services, you should be on your way to online income in no time. Just remember, any legitimate online job takes hard work like any regular job. However, the rewards for the hard work can be very great.
